MENOPAUSE AND HAIR LOSS
ARE YOU DREADING IT | ARE YOU AT OR ON THAT BEAUTIFUL TRANSITION?
What is Menopause?
This is the time that marks the end of a woman's menstrual cycle and normally diagnosed after one has gone 12 months without a menstrual period. It is a time of extreme hormonal changes that commonly occurs when women reach their late 40s and early 50s but the average age is 51. During this transition, many different physical symptoms can appear, including menopausal hair loss. These symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, insomnia, and vaginal dryness just to mention but a few.
What is the connection between Menopause and Hair Loss?
When women experience hair loss and other symptoms of menopause, it is predominantly due to the hormonal changes in the body. When we age, the eggs become less and less which as a result fewer eggs are available to mature and to be released by the ovaries. Because of this effect, the ovaries start to decrease the amount of estrogen that is normally produced resulting in fluctuations in hormones and thus causing numerous physical changes to occur.
When the hormone levels drop, hair begins to grow more slowly and it becomes visibly thinner. The decrease in estrogen and progesterone causes an increase in the male hormones that the body also makes and they are called androgens. These androgens not only cause the hair follicles on your head to reduce, but they are also the same hormones that are responsible for increased facial hair growth in menopausal women.
What is perimenopausal Hair Loss?
Perimenopausal hair loss is just as dramatic as menopausal hair loss and they are both related to the same changes in hormone levels. Perimenopause occurs prior to menopause and can last several years (4 to 8 years). During that period, the fluctuation of hormones cause some of the same symptoms that are typically associated with menopause.
Hair Loss due to hormones; and will it grow back?
Hair loss due to hormones is a reality for many women during menopause and even during pregnancy. But the 1M $ questions is; will it grow back? The answer is YES, but there are also fundamental things that you can do to help:
- Use both our H.H Follicle Stimulant to stimulate the hair roots and our H.H Vitamin Supplements to replenish the insufficient vital vitamins needed by the body. They also naturally stop the production of the DHT endogenous androgen when the hormones start to fluctuate causing less production of estrogen which leads to hair loss.
- Wash your hair regularly (every 2–3 days) using our all Natural Hair Care Set.
- Treat your hair gently. Don’t comb or brush your hair when it’s wet. Finger detangling is a gentler option and avoid tight protective styles that cause added stress on the hair and follicle e.g. tight braids
- Avoid or limit the use of dryers or irons on your hair that tend to dry or damage hair in the long run.
How to prevent Menopause Hair Loss
- A Balanced Diet - A proper balanced diet is always the key when addressing health. As women age, our nutritional demands change along the with the fluctuating hormones. When the estrogen levels decrease in the body, women become more susceptible to conditions such as fractures, constipation, anaemia, and weight gain and thus a proper diet keeps you in check.
- Drinking more water - The most apparent changes you notice during menopause is the appearance of the skin and hair that tend to become more dryer and thinner and the easiest way to tackle this problem is by drinking enough water. It is very important to drink more water if one is experiencing the hot flashes and night sweats so as to not only avoid dehydration but also get rid of toxins and other wastes from the body. Drinking more water helps to alleviate symptoms such as joint pain, constipation, bloating, and fatigue.
- Regular Exercise - This is one of the best things you can do to improve your overall health and wellbeing during menopause. It also helps to not only improve your body circulation but also improve symptoms associated with perimenopause, including bloating, mood swings, stress, and sleep disturbances.
- Using Natural Supplements and Hair Remedies: Taking supplements like our H.H Vitamin Supplements and using natural hair care products like our H.H Follicle Stimulant is very important. They help to prepare the body for the perimenopause and menopause stage.
- Less stress - Stress is the major cause of unwanted health outcomes regardless of anyone's age. Lower estrogen levels can cause menopausal hair loss as well as mood swings, anxiety, and depression and stress only adds to this. To reduce stress levels, one should try to take part in activities that not only help to clear the mind but also relax e.g. yoga.
Recent studies have reported that more than 40 percent of women will experience menopausal hair loss. It is unfortunately unavoidable and unpleasant after effect due to the fluctuating hormone levels during menopause. It is vital to remember that you are not alone and in most cases menopausal hair loss is not permanent.
